Artist Statement
An interplay of word, image, and sound; archival attention to the minutiae of everyday life; metaphors, symbols, a complexity that presents itself in vernacular; dramatic events offered in simple humanity. The references range from ancient philosophy to dancehall songs, which Mimaroğlu weaves into a personal rendering of moments and feelings through diverse media. Whether political oppression, questions of feminism, motherhood, class or sexual fluidity, the social and personal matters are engrained and implicit in the grammar of the works, and the autotheoretical stance takes its cue from actual or imagined dialogues with poets, artists, philosophers, and psychoanalysts. The transdisciplinarity of her practice is possible through continuing collaborations with artists, musicians, curators, and scholars.
