    Born in 1991, Derya Atakan is a trained opera singer and performer challenging and provoking the audience through deconstructing the Eurocentric Lied repertoire and confronting it with contemporary poetry about labor, gender, trauma and taboos. Atakan is living and working in Berlin since 2012.

    “While singing, I try to break the cycle of pace. Everything is a race between emotions and language. Between power and powerlessness. I consider singing my mother tongue. When I enter the stage with my co-performers I am neither a woman nor a young girl nor a man. I am driven by fears and hopes. Maybe I am all of that at once, maybe nothing, or maybe something in between. I want to be. sound. so badly. That's my dream”.
