Artist Statement
Najwa looks at her work not only as a reflection and expression of her ideas and experiences, but also as a virtual, flexible platform on which she can reach out, connect and exchange with others who share the same passion to build metaphorical and physical platforms on which we get to tell our narratives with our own tongues and tools. In her work Najwa explores themes of alienation and isolation either in the homeland or in the place where we seek refuge. After moving to Berlin she started a journey of self exploration in the realms disbelonging and dysmorphia. Giving up on the idea of the return, her headspace has been expanding to acknowledge what's been hidden in the closet for more than 30 years. To do so she opted for diverse artistic mediums: Land art, through which she delves into the meaning of belonging. Poetry, to her, is a portal to a dimension where fairness is possible. Visual work, which she uses to document feelings, thoughts and interactions with the world around her.
